Was it you?

She idled at a red light

Like I had done my entire life

Amongst the noise

Within the smog

An albatross

Floating

In an oil slick

She was texting

Like she shouldn’t

While I invented her story

Like I shouldn’t

Because to me

She was no one

Yet I had decided

She was rushing home

To prepare a dinner

She wouldn’t remember

For someone

Who would break her heart

The trap was in thinking

That everyone

Is no one

Until you make them

Someone

But if that were true

The outcome was the same.

Because if that were true

I’d have said something.

And if that were true

I wouldn’t have to ask

Was it you?
